Laser technology has been more and more prevalent in cosmetic skin care over the recent years. Lasers can be used in many ways, E.G. removing age spots, acne, hair, spider veins, improving skin texture, diminishing fine line, and wrinkles, while generally giving skin a younger and fresher look.

The effectiveness of a cosmetic laser depends on the wavelength of the laser and its energy for the targeted tissue. The beam of light, with specified wavelength, targets the exact type of body tissue treated. For example, the laser targets the melanin in the hair follicle to achieve hair removal and stimulates the growth of collagen and removes the damaged cells to reduce the wrinkles and improve the acne scar. The laser also targets the hemoglobin molecule and cauterizes blood vessels to treat vascular lesions, such as rosacea, spider veins, and hemangiomas.

The laser is absorbed and converted into heat once it reaches body tissue. The heat inactivates or destroys cells in the target area without affecting other cells surrounding it. This is because different wavelengths only affect certain cells, so only the targeted cell is affected. Lasers can reach greater depths and achieve more significant changes than would be possible with other common types of treatment. Thus, lasers have opened therapeutic options enormously, while being time efficient and affordable.

There are two types of lasers used for cosmetic skin procedures:

Ablative lasers can remove the unwanted changes seen in aged, damaged skin while tightening and refreshing healthy skin. Ablative lasers are more invasive than non-ablative lasers. Typically, the local anesthesia is applied before the treatments with ablative lasers.

Non-ablative lasers are generally not invasive and often used to heat a certain area of the skin, and can be used by anyone who is certified to use this type of laser.

For some people, laser treatment can be uncomfortable during the treatment and you should know what options are available to you to minimize the discomfort. Some patients “feel nothing” even in the high power of laser. Our laser specialists will alert you to all possibilities; and will also give you various choices that will help make you feel more comfortable during treatment. And because laser treatments need multiple sessions, it is important to know your comfort zone. We provide many levels of local anesthesia with topical anesthetics, Cryo6 chilling and local facial nerve blocking if indicated. What happens after the treatment will be outlined for you prior to the commencing therapy, the detailed post-laser treatment instructions will be given.

Here at Shu Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we use the latest and most advanced laser technologies to provide the most effective—but also the least invasive—procedures possible. Laser skin rejuvenation comes in many different forms, so explore and discover the perfect laser treatments for you.
