Cosmetic facial surgery has gone through much advancement over the years. In the past a facelift would’ve taken several days of recovery in a hospital – now most patients just go home immediately after the surgery. And now with new technology and technique, facelift surgery has never before been more convenient and affordable.
Types of facelifts
Facelifts are procedures that tighten the lower face and neck, and will require incisions in front of and/or behind the ear. There are three general type of facelifts: small, medium, and large. Patients choose the size of the facelift depending on how much younger they wish to look. E.G. if a patient has minor aging, they would choose a small facelift, and so on and so forth.
In the practice of cosmetic surgery, a small facelift is colloquially known as a “weekend lift” or “J-lift” in our practice. A patient may have a procedure on Thursday and be able to return to work on Tuesday. A medium lift is also known as a “mini lift” for moderate aging. A large lift is known as a “comprehensive facelift” and is a more extensive procedure than the small and medium lift.
Dr. Shu performs a multiple layer face lift. This means that not just the skin is tightened, but the deeper layers as well, creating a longer lasting lift, despite being more difficult to perform.
J Face Lift
“J lifts” or “weekend lifts” are for patients with minimal to moderate aging or cannot physically tolerate a more taxing, larger lift. The term “weekend lift” is derived from the short recovery period. It is not uncommon to perform this type of a lift on a Thursday and have the patient return to work the following Tuesday. The J lift is an excellent procedure for sagging jowls and minor neck aging. Recovery from this type of lift usually takes 4-5 days. This is due to the small incision around the earlobe. This is perfect for busy people that merely want a minor correction to be done.
Mini Face Lift
“Mini lift”, or the “medium facelift” is the most common type of facelift as it addresses common lower facial aging changes in 45-60 year old’s which are the most popular ages for facelift procedures. Candidates for the mini lift are patients with moderate signs of facial aging. The “mini lift” is the medium type of lift and addresses more aging than the weekend facelift but is not as aggressive as the comprehensive (large) facelift.
Full Face Lift
Almost all extensive facelifts (large facelifts) require 2 more procedures known as a platysmaplasty or submentoplasty and chin/neck liposuction. A more natural, tighter, longer lasting facelift will result from the three procedures together. A facelift without addressing the midline deep tissues will be fine for a year or two, but after that, the neck bands and sagging may return, prompting another facelift. Dr. Shu addresses this muscle by tightening the platysma muscle in the center of the neck and lateral platysma, creating a natural appearing, but still long lasting lift. Submentoplasty involves tightening the deep tissues of the floor of the mouth, which is very important regarding the aesthetics of the chin and neck.
Liposuction for the Face
Liposuction removes excess fat in the chin, neck, and border of the jaw and creates the sharp cervicomental angle and younger looking. Many patients who choose the face lift often do the neck liposuction together.
Natural Facial Rejuvenation
Natural Facial Rejuvenation – For patients looking to undergo a natural change in facial contour, we offer both natural facial rejuvenation using fat transfer and stem cell enhanced fat transfer. While both procedures help restore volume to the face, stem cell enhanced fat transfer adds regenerative cells that improve the fat cell survival to create an even more youthful look. Using tissue transferred from one part of the body to the face using the patient’s own stem cells and fat, this technique provides a safer, more effective path to facial rejuvenation. Many patients with the face lift also consider the natural facial rejuvenation using fat transfer at the same time for the best result.
Here at Shu Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we use the latest and most advanced techniques to provide the most effective—but also the least invasive—procedures possible. Facial rejuvenation comes in many different forms, so explore and discover the perfect facial procedure for you.
